Sensory problems and intelligence

We cannot estimate the intelligence of autistic children. Even when we talk about low functioning children, we have no idea about their intelligence. The sensory disorder is usually causing sterotype behaviour and restricted understanding. If they are so occupied with their body, if they are imprisoned in it, they just cannot pay attention to anything else besides that what they are feeling or in need to do. 

If our leg is tickling, that will occupy us and we wil have a hard time concentrating on what the other person is telling us. 

Don't approach them as if they were retarded. I am sure they are not at all!
