Language understanding
Question:
When I ask my child to call for his mama, he doesn't do it. I know he wants his mama to come. Then why doesn't he call her, while I tell him so. Doesn't he understand language?
Answer:
It seems that your child is still functioning on a concrete level of understanding. If you ask him, if he wants a biscuit, he will probably respond in some way. To call his mama in order for her to come, is advanced communication level for an autistic child. With his egocentric brain, he doesn't understand why he would do that. It is too abstract yet. If you play therapeutically with your child though, he will certainly achieve this level one day, when he has become more social and more mutual!
I remember Konstantinos asking for his banana. He always had something to eat with him, while he played with us all morning. He knew very wel to say the word banana, when he felt like eating one. When I asked him several times what he just ate, as soon as he swallowed his piece of banana, he would not react at all.One day though, he did answer me: "Banana!". It was a huge step forward!
